Evening Update

Sue and I just returned from dinner at the local pub where we had a great meal and entertained the locals with our stories about walking The Coast to Coast. We have decided to spread good will wherever we go and dispel the image of the ugly American. They seem to enjoy our creative way of doing this walk, by foot, by taxi and by van! In England they do not tip waitresses so when we tipped our lovely lady tonight we thought she might cry. We are safely tucked in to a lovely B&B and I hope Sue will take her clothes off and sleep tonight. We are the only hikers who have arrived here so far, the men who are staying here called earlier to say that they were lost and had just found their way so they would be late. Imagine if the two of us had done this leg! I am including a few pictures of our day in Shap.

  4. OMG - you guys are amazing, but if it weren't for you guys I wouldn't be sitting at this dumb computer for who knows how long, reading, picturing you guys walking, walking, walking, walking...and so on and being totally entertained!! Your pics are absolutely amazing as is the scenery, even if the feet don't think so and I love your blogs...many smiles; and I can hear you Sue, telling your stories..funny!! ...Especially the "seedy" place and remaining ready for the "great escape"!! Sooo reminds me of Ireland..the rain, the clouds, the rain, the clouds, the wind and a teeny bit of sun. The scenery is actually very similar and the lack of trees (just like Ireland) is interesting as well!! You guys have fun, be safe and take care of those feet!! ...oh and keep up the entertainment!! Now let's see if this works!! :) Oh I almost forgot ... Love Gail

Sue and Mary Ellen, I knew you would do just the right thing whether it was knowing when to take a break (I never knew you could get a blister under your toenail)to breaking the ugly American image,to making us feel we are right there with you with pictures, you are doing this adventure in the best way possible. Keep it up! Gloria

  6. I'm loving every word!! Can't wait to get to Canton for more photos when you return. Bill and I are half packed and half moved back. He is going to Canton today to pick up his truck that blew its water pump on our last trip. 9 hours there and 9 back is not a fun trip.

    Keep up the blog!

  7. Mary Ellen and Sue,

You are wonderful! Your photos are superb; makes us want to go to England - by plane, then train, then van. You can be very proud of yourselves but the trails are a bit confusing. Do they spread bread like in the Hansel and Gretel story? You'll be bathing beauties on the beach at PI with all your walking. Can't wait to hear all about your trip. Dale and Carol
